Politics may make strange bedfellows, but even so former Presidential Contender Gary Hart could not have expected solace from his old political adversary Richard Nixon. Three days after questions about adultery forced Hart's angry, defiant withdrawal from the race for the Democratic nomination last May 8, Nixon wrote a letter praising him for handling a "very difficult situation uncommonly well."

Hart, who ran George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign against Nixon, responded ten days later with a warm note thanking the ex-President for his "words of support" and extolling his efforts for arms control. The erstwhile candidate might also have mused about...
