Education: Report Card

¶In a survey of U.S. reading habits, the American Institute of Public Opinion reported some sorry figures: 57% of the nation's high-school graduates and 26% of its college graduates have not read a single book in the past year. Asked to name the authors of twelve famous works— Leaves of Grass, Gulliver's Travels, The Origin of Species, etc.—9% of the college graduates could not give a single name. 39% could not name more than three.
