¶ W. Gardner Barker, 45, executive vice president of Thomas J. Lipton, Inc., became president and chief executive officer, succeeding Robert Smallwood, 65, who retired after 20 years with Lipton. Under Smallwood's leadership, Lipton's sales increased more than 14 times ($103.5 million in 1957), its profits more than 25 times ($5,500,000 in 1957).
