Halsey Jr., aboard his flagship at headquarters in the South Pacific, hangs a new, unofficial motto for the U.S. Navy, sent to him by Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz:* "The Lord gave us two ends to use, one to think with and one to sit with. The war depends on which we choose —heads we win, tails we lose."
