The Republicans are leaving nothing to chance, including candidates' wives. A manual put out by the National Republican Congressional Committee instructs women on how to comport themselves on just about every mentionable occasion. Dress, for example: "Not too short. Be certain hemline is straight. No missing buttons." Perfume: "Not too much—light cologne better." Manners: "When your husband is speaking, watch him proudly. Never appear bored, even if you have heard the same speech repeatedly."

More in tune with the times, if no less officious, the Democrats have put out a sheet for both...
