National Affairs: First Returns

A month after John F. Kennedy entered the White House, he had won a solid vote of approval from nearly three-quarters of the electorate. "Do you approve or disapprove of the way Kennedy is handling his job as President?" asked the Gallup poll. The results:

Approve Disapprove No Opinion

All Voters 72% 6% 22%

Republicans 55% 13% 32%

Democrats 84% 3% 13%

Independents 65% 6% 29%

Kennedy's score edged Dwight Eisenhower's 68% approval after his first 30 days in office. In his years as President, Ike's popularity fever chart ranged from 79% to 49%, Harry Truman's from 87% to 23% and Franklin Roosevelt's from 84% to 50%.
