INSURANCE: Metropolitan's Records

The Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., the biggest U.S. company, with total assets of $12.3 billion (v. $11.9 billion for A.T. & T.), last week listed four new records in its annual report for 1953:

¶ It has the highest insurance coverage in history: 37.2 million people, or about one in five in the U.S. and Canada.

¶ The most insurance in force: $56 billion.

¶ The most new business in 1953: $4.1 billion.

¶ Paid out the most money in one year to policyholders: $1.1 billion.
