National Affairs: War's End

President Truman this week asked Congress to pass a resolution ending the state of war with Germany. The resolution would be a legal substitute for a peace treaty, long stalled by Russia. Other Allies of World War II, led by Great Britain, Australia, Italy* New Zealand and South Africa, also moved to end the state of war.

*Italy declared war on Germany 35 days after surrendering to the Allies, became not an ally but a "cobelligerent."
