¶ A Chicago company put up pickles in 20 flavors of liquor (nonalcoholic). Those who liked their pickles straight could down them and taste bourbon, brandy, rum or Scotch. For mixed-picklers, there were Manhattans, Martinis and Daiquiris.

¶ The National Father's Day Committee named 79-year-old William Gasper Peter of Beech Creek, Pa. the father of the largest family of 1949: he has 18 children, 80 grandchildren. Said Peter, who is not too old to work as a log splitter: "I hit the wedge hard because that is a way of blowing off steam."
