Peppery, indomitable Sir Thomas Beecham last week launched his Mexico City Mozart festival (TIME, July 31).

Taking over the orchestra directed by his rival, the Opera Nacional's Jascha Horenstein, Sir Thomas found evidence of his predecessor's influence in rehearsal.
