Want ads in current German newspapers tell a story of hopeless retreat from Russia, of hopeful return to the homeland:

From the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung: “Legal adviser at present employed in the East, speaking Russian, is looking for suitable position wholesale trade or industry. Preference given to lasting employment.”

From the same paper: “Business manager wholesale trade experience, age 45, experienced in dealing with authorities and military administrations, fluent Russian, looking for new responsible position.”

From the Völkischer Beobachter: “Storekeeper last employed for eleven months in Ukraine as manager of warehouse looking for new connection. . . .”

From the Berliner Boersen-Zeitung: “Secretary-interpreter, perfect Russian, English, expert stenographer-typist, at present employed in Vilna, looking for other employment, preferably inside Germany.”
