¶ Last week it developed that when Franklin Roosevelt helped Elmer Thomas to beat Gomer Smith in Oklahoma (see col. 1), he put some cash into Son Elliott Roosevelt's pocket. Correspondent Bascom Timmons on the President's train was offering 3-to-1 on Smith until Elliott's father spoke for Thomas at Oklahoma City. Then Elliott sent for Timmons, who protested the odds had changed, were now 8-to-10. Elliott agreed to the odds but refused to bet "chicken feed." badgered unhappy Timmons into betting $800 to $1,000.
