Cosmetic-conscious women have dutifully painted their lips vermilion one season, chalk white the next, applied pancake, powder and rouge with abandon (when Vogue endorsed The Ruddy Look), cut down on foundation bases (when Harper's Bazaar approved of Naked Cheeks).
