¶ Wearing his stern concepts of amateurism like a chip on his shoulder, International Olympic Committee President Avery Brundage promoted a new addition to the Olympic oath: "I am now, and intend to remain, an amateur." He seemed surprised to learn that there might be athletes who could not predict their futures and could not sign in good conscience.
