UNITED NATIONS: Rebuff

By a lopsided majority of 53 to 5, with only the Soviet bloc in opposition and Yugoslavia abstaining, the U.N. General Assembly last week approved the U.S.British-sponsored resolution listing twelve "essentials" for peace and international cooperation (TIME, Nov. 21). Then, by a similar margin, the Assembly rejected the rival Russian resolution proposing a phony non-aggression pact among the big powers and smearing the Western nations as warmongers. The vote meant total defeat for the Russians' major effort at the current Assembly session.
