POLITICAL NOTES: Swing to the Right

Is a conservative trend running in the U.S.? Last week there was some testimony on this from non-conservatives.

Said the liberal New Republic: “Cautious Democrats and fainthearted liberals are already seeking shelter after the political devastation of the last few weeks. They have decided the Democrats are slated to lose in 1948, and they are seeking the best cover they can find.”

Assessing the Warren earthquake in California (TIME, June 17), New Dealing New York Post Columnist Samuel Grafton wrote:

“There is some tired talk about the ‘swing of the pendulum,’ but that was no pendulum; that was a kick in the face. . . . It is true that there is a swing to the right. . . . Voters may vote for a Republican who wants a strong anti-labor measure; but they will not vote for a Democrat who wants one. They have no reason to. . . .”
