Sport: Watch the Ford Go By

One of the world's fastest swimmers, Yaleman Alan Ford, 20, last week won his college the N.C.A.A. championship at New Haven. In doing so, he:

¶ Equaled the 100-yd. free-style world record he had set the week before (TIME, March 27) in 49.7 seconds. That time had broken Ford's previous record—50.7 seconds—which in turn had broken the 17-year-old record set by Johnny Weissmuller.

¶ Set a new Yale pool record for the 50-yd. free-style U.S.—22.2 seconds—a tenth of a second away from Henry Kozlowski's world record.
