¶The typical schoolmarm fifteen years ago was her own janitor, boarded with a local family, earned $867 a year. After questioning 4,200 rural schoolteachers, the National Education Association decided that times are changing. In 1952 she was apt to have her own home, drive an automobile, make $2,484.
