It was a sunny afternoon in Hoboken, and 71-year-old Brother Salesius Klein decided on a walk after lunch. His work in the U.S. was about over. As Brother-General of the Roman Catholic order of the Poor Brothers of St. Francis, he was at the end of a two-month tour of his order's schools and charities. In a few days he would be on the high seas, on his way back to Aachen, Germany.

In a Hoboken park, he stepped into a public washroom. There, two hoodlums attacked Brother Salesius, beat him insensible and stole his wallet. It held about $10. They left...
