¶ New Jersey's Republican Senator Robert Hendrickson cocked an ear for popular acclaim, met with a cathedral hush, and came to a politician's most distressing decision: not to stand for reelection. Last week Hendrickson, an earnest but ineffectual performer in Washington, withdrew from the G.O.P. primary. With Hendrickson scratched, the odds-on Republican favorite becomes former Representative Clifford Case, who would probably have won the primary even if Hendrickson had stayed in (TIME, March 15).
