¶ In Paris, the U.S.'s Joe Pitman over Russia's V. Svetilko for the world lightweight weight-lifting championship. Said Joe: "That Russian was the only one I really wanted to beat." The U.S. went on to win the team title.

¶ In Fort Worth, National Amateur Golf Champion Beverly Hanson over Pro Patty Berg, 1-up, for the Texas open title.
