In St. Louis, Judge Eugene J. Sartorius reported that more & more wives were canceling divorce suits against draft-age husbands. The judge thought he knew why, and he had a name for such women: “Allotment Annies.” They expected their husbands might go to war, leaving a monthly Government allotment check behind; the Annies would thus get some of the benefits, without any of the burdens, of marriage.
