As a storm gathered and brooded over the flat Florida swamplands, Convict Angelo Massina, 30, sat tensely in the prison truck, making his plans. When the truck stopped for a traffic light outside Winter Haven, Massina jumped down and lit out across a field toward an orange grove.

Suddenly, from the lowering clouds, lightning stabbed down. It bracketed his running figure in eerie light. He threw up his hands protectively and stumbled on. The lightning stabbed again. He fell.
