On the ground of "fairness," many a Southern newspaper has stopped identifying Negroes as such, especially when the description is not really relevant to the story (TIME, Oct. 9, 1950). Last week Southern newspapers learned that dropping the race tag can be prudent as well as fair. In Mississippi Mrs. Mary Dunigan, a waitress, sued the Natchez Times (circ. 5,438) for mistakenly identifying her as a Negro.
