¶ The Federal Council of Churches presented to President Truman a seven-point program for "averting war without yielding sound democratic principles." Highlights: no complacency, hysteria or fatalism about war; economic, social and moral programs to combat Communism, rather than military strategy; renewed vigor of the churches in testifying to God's love and Christian fellowship.

¶ Throughout the U.S., Roman Catholics celebrated May Day for the second year by gathering in churches to pray for the conversion of the U.S.S.R. Typical prayer (repeated five times): "Saviour of the World, save Russia."
