Transpacific air routes, once Pan American Airways' private pie, were sliced up last week. The Civil Aeronautics Board, over Pan American's objections, handed a luscious slice to United Air Lines, which during the war flew some 5,000 flights between the U.S. and Hawaii for the Army. United got a San Francisco to Honolulu route paralleling Pan Am's. CAB picked United from the six applicants for the route because a majority of the travelers to Hawaii come from U.S. cities served by United. Thus United will be able to offer them single-carrier service all the way.
