Would the replacement of Tory Churchill by Laborite Attlee (see FOREIGN NEWS) improve British-Soviet relations? There was room for doubt. Said a Soviet diplomat last week:
"It is likely that from now on Soviet diplomats will be more cautious in their dealings with the British. For we do not know yet where we stand with Attlee.
"Churchill's attitude towards Russia was clear cut: we have always known what he thinks of us. Attlee's pretense for leftist trends will complicate our relations until we know exactly what the British foreign policy will be."
