Argentina leisurely counted up the results of last week’s balloting for 85 of the 158 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. A final count was not expected for another week, but returns indicated strong gains by the Conservative Concordancia (coalition).
To Argentina this meant a thumping personal victory for Acting President Castillo. To the rest of the world it meant that a diplomatic break with the Axis would be forthcoming, when Castillo got around to it. Ramon Castillo was in no hurry.
Chile, only other American republic which has not broken relations with the Axis, indicated that Lawyer Ernesto Barros Jarpa would become Foreign Minister. With Barros, a stanch supporter of the U.S., in the Foreign Office, Chile felt that Washington would understand if she, too, thought things over a while longer.
