VETERANS Happy Anniversary
At the Army’s Percy Jones hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan, Master Sergeant Frederic Hensel, 27, and his dark-haired wife Jewell celebrated their third wedding anniversary this week. Sergeant Hensel, the first U.S. “basket case” of World War II (TIME, July 23), got stacks of letters from all over the nation. Many contained cash—to help him start a chicken farm. Total anniversary gift: about $60,000.
