Music: Perla's Picture

The U.S. got its first picture last week of Durban Harbor's Perla Siedle (see cut), onetime Wagnerian soprano whose tireless waterfront singing to Allied convoys has made her one of South Africa's great wartime personalities (TIME, Nov. 15). Perla, known affectionately to thousands of soldiers and sailors as Durban's Lady in White, sings God Bless America for Yanks, There'll Always Be an England for Tommies, Waltzing Matilda for Aussies.
