With around 4,000,000 troops safely overseas, the U.S. suffered its worst transport disaster of World War II. Last week the Army announced in a detail-bare communique that 1,000 U.S. soldiers had died in the sinking of an Allied ship in European waters “due to enemy action … at night in a heavy sea.”
