Business: Still Expanding

The Federal Government is still pushing new construction at breakneck pace, despite the curb on expansion announced by WPB six weeks ago (TIME, May 25). Engineering construction awards in the July 9 week were $401,603,000, second highest weekly total in U.S. history and 34% above last year. Private builders had very little to do with the total. They signed only $8,237,000 contracts; the Federal Government signed 98% of all the rest.
