Last May, Secretary General Joseph Louis Anne Avenol gave the 205 other employes of the League of Nations their choice between resigning at once and agreeing to the suspension of their contracts at any time. All but 89 quit. Last week, the League's great white limestone palace closed, its archives as safe as they could be in Geneva, M. Avenol regretfully asked the 89 to resign too. But so long as Joseph Avenol can keep himself employed, the League is not stone dead.
