General of the Army Douglas MacArthur last week announced that his occupation of Japan was cheaper in manpower than the occupation of any other area in the world. There was only one Allied soldier in Japan for every 400 Japanese. Highest ratio of groups to population is in the Russian zone of Austria (1 to 15).
The occupation ratios for other occupation zones, according to MacArthur’s headquarters:
Korea (U.S. zone) 1 to 340
Italy 1 to 113
Austria (British zone) 1 to 83
Austria (U.S. zone) 1 to 79
Germany (British zone) 1 to 63
Germany (French zone) 1 to 58
Germany (U.S. zone) 1 to 54
Korea (Russian zone) 1 to 45
Germany (Russian zone) 1 to 28
Austria (French zone) 1 to 21
