In Louisville, where the first Saturday of May is known as Derby Day, 6,500 racing diehards elbowed their way to bet ting windows and wagered $11,483. The winner, Broken Spring, paid $2.50 on a 50¢ ticket for waddling home in 1:20 3/5 for the 20-foot course. It was the first and perhaps only Kentucky Turtle Derby. (At nearby Churchill Downs, 30 Derby candidates were in training for a hoped-for June 2 running of the 71st Kentucky classic.)
