Iowa City’s Daily Iowan wanted to see how accurate it was. So Editor R. Bruce Hughes clipped each day’s local stories, sent them to the people they mentioned, invited corrections and complaints.
Last week he had more than 600 returns. Most frequent error: wrong names & addresses. Most frequent complaint: male readers wanted to be called “Mr.” in stories. Most notable conclusion: readers liked slanted stories as long as they were slanted their way.
