They were off in the $10,000 La Salle Handicap at Detroit's Fair Grounds. Up in the press box, jolly George Krehbiel raised his big binoculars and began telling the television audience what he saw.

"Golden Man goes to the front . . . Marltown second . . . Diamond Dick third. ... In the backstretch now and Golden Man has opened a two-length lead." Suddenly George's voice rose to a hoarse screech: "They're going into the far turn and Golden Man is still two lengths ahead!" Listeners heard a strangled sound, then wild shouts: "Come on, Jimmy, ride him, Jimmy, ride him...
