Independence Day, 1947
This is New York's Coney Island, crowded with an estimated 1,300,000 the first day of the long July 4 weekend. By the millions, other U.S. citizens swarmed out of their cities and headed for a holiday. Some 30,000,000 cars jockeyed for space on the roads. This week, mosquito-bitten and sunburned, Americans were back at work and the nation counted its 553 holiday dead: 163 drowned, 271 killed on the highways, 119 dead in other accidents.
