ITALY: Return of the Natives

The prisoners of war returning from Russia were thin, unkempt, hungry, tired. Relief workers greeted them with what poor Italy could afford: a cup of minestrone, two small loaves of bread, an apple.

At Folano the local Communist party turned out with red flags to welcome the travelers from the Soviet fatherland. The POWs remembered scanty rations, hard marches through the snow and Russian favors to Italians who embraced Communism. They fell upon the welcomers, killed three, injured 50.
