JAPAN: Outside Hirohito

Wrote an unhappy Japanese to one of TIME'S foreign correspondents:

"Speaking flankly, the contents of [this] letter is a horrible confession of a man who seems to be in a chaotic state of mind. ... I wonder why I am such a deteriorated fellow. . . .

"The myth of unbroken dynasty is a matter of forced lie. Certain emperors were the son of his father-emperor's mistresses, as was 123rd emperor.* Nevertheless, emperor is a living God. Rather! Some of them were idiot and even sexually abnormal. Unbroken dynasty? Unbroken by emperor's concumbine!...
