Milestones: Longtime Defense

The lure of better-paid defense jobs is draining teachers from the schools. Rural schools face a shortage of 50,000 teachers in the coming year. Average salary of rural teachers is $900 a year; more than half of all the nation's teachers get under $2,000.

Because of these findings the National Education Association last week sent an SOS to school boards throughout the land, urged them to up teachers' pay. Said N.E.A.: "The longtime battle for democracy will be won in the schools. ... It is of utmost importance to the American way of life that we do not weaken our longtime defense...
