TIME
John Adams Abbott, Bostonian, descendant of President John Adams, odist of his class at Harvard (’25), recently jailed at Rome charged with “speaking disrespectfully” of Premier Mussolini (TIME, May 10), was released last week by the examining magistrate, who dismissed the charge.
Mr. Abbott said: “I have nothing but praise for the keepers and officials of the Regina Coeli Prison. True, after the first half day’s solitary confinement I was placed with common criminals. Among my companions was one man awaiting trial for stealing quantities of cheese. Another was accused of murdering a man who had attempted to attack his daughter. But this is part of the country’s system.”
