Sport: Army v. Navy

Since the U.S. Naval Air Station at Lakehurst, NJ. is hard by the Lakewood Country Club, many a Lakehurst officer has been able to brush up on his golf. Lakehurst last week challenged nearby Fort Dix to an Army-Navy golf match, named as their entrants Lt. Commanders George Watson, R. F. Tylor. Lieut. M. F. D. Flaherty.

Quick to accept was Fort Dix’s Commander. For the Army team he selected two buck privates: Edward (“Porky”) Oliver and T. Suffern (“Tommy”) Tailer. Oliver, one of the country’s top pros, tied with Gene Sarazen and Lawson Little for last year’s U.S. Open championship. Tailer, one of the country’s top amateurs, was once a quarter-finalist in the U.S. Amateur.

Piqued, Lakehurst’s Commander immediately sent his golf team off on an extended airship flight, got two top-flight tournament golfers to take on the buck privates.
