Ten years ago, a four-minute mile, a seven-foot high jump, a 15-foot pole vault were considered as unlikely as a cow jumping over the moon. Year after year U. S. athletes, a dedicated, concentrated and highly competitive lot, have approached nearer & nearer these impossible figures. Last week, at Berkeley, Calif., Pole Vaulter Cornelius Warmerdam of the San Francisco Olympic Club became the first trackman officially to do the “impossible.” In a triangular track meet (University of California, Washington State College, San Francisco Olympic Club) he succeeded in clearing the bar at 15 ft.—one inch higher than the world’s record set in 1937 by Bill Sefton & Earle Meadows.
