After several weeks of comparative silence, Alabama’s senior Senator, James Thomas (“Tom Tom”) Heflin, who mortally hates and fears the Roman Pope, made an oration in Montgomery, Ala., in which he said:
“Tammany Hall is a tumor in the side of the Democratic party and … an operation is necessary. Tammany is unclean, unwholesome and corrupt. . . . We are eventually going to separate from the Tammany bunch, so why not now?
“I love the Democratic Party. . . .
“Smith has as much chance of carrying New York State as a mouse-colored mule has of operating an airplane.”
