A few weeks ago The Nation (Manhattan Liberal weekly) declared that Herr Hugo Stinnes owned “from 40% to 90% of the German press.” Last week a denial came from Germany:
“As manager of the newspaper owned by Herr Stinnes, I am in a position to assure you that he owns but the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (published in Berlin and Frankfurt-am-Main), the Industrie und Handdszeitung and the Frankfurter Nachrichten.
“Herr Stinnes neither owns nor controls any other daily newspaper.
” Humann ” Office of Hugo Stinnes
” Berlin.”
A few months ago it could have been said that there were three great newspaper barons in the world—Stinnes, Northcliffe, Hearst. Of Stinnes this is denied. Northcliffe is dead. Only Hearst remains.
