To Balmoral Castle, where the late Queen Victoria was wont to indulge a "homespun taste for Scotland," journeyed British royalty to spend the weekend. Tenants, servants, and "gillies" on the Balmoral, Agergeldie and Birknall estates were bidden by their Britannic Majesties to a ball. The King's own piper, Major Forsyth, was in attendance; and, "as an interested spectator," came the Archbishop of York.
Modern dances were barred. The program consisted of Strathspeys, Circassian Circles, Spanish Gavotte, the Reel of Tulloch, eightsomes and waltzes. The Queen missed scarcely a dance, personally selected several...
