The Legislative Assembly by 58 votes to 47 rejected a proposal to double the salt duty, after the budget was returned from the Council of State.
In view of the necessity of balancing the budget, it is thought that Lord Reading, the Viceroy, will certify the tax in an Extraordinary Gazette (special order) as essential for the safety, tranquillity and interests of British India.
