DIED. BILL ("SHOE") SHOEMAKER , 72, legendary thoroughbred jockey who rode winners in 11 Triple Crown races; in San Marino, California. Just 1.49 meters tall and weighing 44 kilograms, Shoemaker was a horse-track heavyweight, with 8,833 victories in 40,350 races, the second-most wins in history. Late Los Angeles Times sports columnist Jim Murray said Shoemaker rode "with the effortless ease and grace of a guy born to do what he was doing."
