I've never understood why immigration should be a partisan issue. Republicans and Democrats are both for secure borders and a legal, rational path to citizenship. No one disputes that immigration has helped build this nation. Even the political battles over immigration seem a little contrived. George W. Bush was elected President in 2000 promising immigration reform. John McCain began his 2008 campaign for President fighting a losing battle for immigration reform in the Senate.
